大学院で必要とされる英語力

 
プリンストン大学の学生は約10%が外国の出身で、なかでも日本からの留学生は0.5%ほどになります。

共通言語は英語で統一されており、当然、授業も全て英語で行われる為、日常的なやりとりに加えて専門性に特化した高度な語学力も求められます。

英語が母語でない学生には英語力を証明するスコアの提示が求められており、主な大学院コースの英語力のボーダーラインは以下の通りです。なお、以下表のほかにもスピーキングセクションにおいて、TOEFLは27点以下、IELTSは8.0を下回っている場合は、入学許可の通知を受け取った後にプリンストン大学が用意するテストを受ける必要があります。

TOEFLはiBT、IELTSはAcademic moduleのスコアが対象になります。大学院での授業は高度な英語の理解力が必要とされます。いずれも高いスコアが要求されますが、これはあくまで必要最低点数です。入学後も高い語学力がないと、専門性の非常に高い授業についていけませんので、できる限りボーダーラインギリギリを目指すのではなく、満点に近い点数を狙いましょう。

アイビーリーグにも所属する世界有数の大学であり、国際色豊かな環境で勉強や研究をすることができる大学として多くの国から非常に優秀な人材が集まってくるプリンストン大学に入るためには、かなり高い英語力を求められますが、入った後にその分思う存分自分の興味分野を深めることができるでしょう。

出願から合否発表までの流れ

オンラインで出願が可能

近年はオンライン環境も整い、アメリカの多くの大学では出願から合否発表までインターネット上で全てを完結させてしまえることも多いです。プリンストン大学も例外なくオンラインでの出願窓口は完備されており、全ての手続きをインターネット上で終えることが可能です。

公式ウェブサイトに用意されている出願フォームにデータ化した必要書類をアップロードすることで出願は完了します。出願を考え始めたら、まずは公式ウェブサイトを確認して、出願の流れを確認するようにしましょう。

出願書類

一般的にコースで必要になる書類は次のとおりです。

・受験料（US＄95）

・志望理由書（1000ワード以内）

・履歴書

・推薦状（3通）

・学位の証明書のコピー（大学のもの。日本語英語両方）

・大学の成績証明書（出願時に学生の場合）

・GRE（アメリカの大学院出願にあたって求められる共通試験）

・英語力の証明書（TOEFLまたはIELTSスコア）

・ライティングサンプル（コースによる）

・財源の証明（建築科を除く全てのコース）

• Application Fee

The application fee is $95. Information about application fee waivers can be found at fee waiver.

• Statement of Academic Purpose

Applicants will be required to upload a statement of academic purpose with the admission application in the space provided. Please write a statement of current academic and future career plans as they relate to the Princeton department to which the applicant is applying. In doing so, please cite relevant academic, professional and personal experiences that influenced the decision to apply for graduate admission and to obtain a graduate degree. The statement should not exceed 1,000 words and must be written in English.

• Resume/Curriculum Vitae

Applicants will be required to upload a resume or curriculum vitae with the admission application in the space provided. Resumes or curricula vitae should include employment, activities, community service, education, and academic or professional honors.

Applicants should be sure to review the final resume or curriculum vitae before uploading it and submitting an admission application. If an applicant submitted an application and needs to revise the resume or curriculum vitae, the applicant may upload the corrected version through the checklist if it is before the deadline. After the deadline, no revised resume or curriculum vitae will be accepted.

• Recommendation Letters

Three letters of recommendation are required. The letters must be written in English and come from faculty members or other individuals well acquainted with the applicant’s academic work.

Due to the volume of applications which are received, and in order to read each application thoroughly and thoughtfully, we limit the number of recommendations to three.

• Transcripts

Applicants are required to upload a transcript (may be unofficial at this time) including the key from all attended colleges or universities.The transcript must show the name of the student, name of the issuing institution, name of courses taken, and the grades received in those courses. Applicants with transcripts in languages other than English will need to upload an official English translation along with such transcripts. If you only have a sealed copy of the transcript, you may open it, scan it, and upload it to the application. Transcripts should be scanned in black and white at a maximum resolution of 300dpi and no larger than 10MB. Screenshots from student portals will not be accepted as an unofficial transcript.

• Fall Semester Grades

Applicants will be encouraged to upload a current transcript which includes the fall semester grades from the college or university where currently enrolled. If an applicant is not a current student or if the school does not provide fall semester grades, fall semester grades are not required.

• GRE (Graduate Record Examination)

Graduate School applicants may be required to submit valid test scores to be considered for admission, depending on the department. Applicants whose native language is not English must meet the English language proficiency requirements and may be required to submit TOEFL/IELTS test scores.

Test scores should be sent no later than three weeks before the deadline to ensure receipt of the official score report by the deadline.

There is no place in our application for you to self-report required test scores as we only accept the official score reports sent from the test administrator.

• English Language Tests

The two internationally recognized tests of English language proficiency which we accept are Test of English as a Foreign Language(link is external) (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System(link is external) (IELTS).

The following applicants must submit valid TOEFL or IELTS scores:

• Applicants whose native language is not  Native language is defined as the language spoken in one’s family, community, and nation. (English must be the nativelanguage of the nation.)
• Applicants whose native language is notEnglish and who have earned an undergraduate degree from a college/university in a country where the native language is not English.
• Applicants whose native language is not English and whohave earned a master’s degree in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or Anglophone Canada.
• Applicants whose native language isnot English but studied for less than three years at a college/university in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or Anglophone Canada.

The only exemption for this requirement is if the native language is not English, but the applicant has or will have studied for a minimum of three years towards a bachelor’s degree or a Ph.D. in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or Anglophone Canada before enrollment.

Receiving a bachelor’s degree in a country that lists English as an official language such as India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Nigeria, or Singapore does not exempt an applicant from the English language proficiency requirement.

• Writing Sample

Some departments require uploading a writing sample with the admission application in the space provided.  Please be sure to review the document before uploading and submitting the application. An applicant may upload a revised version of the writing sample before the deadline of the department. After the deadline, no revised documents will be accepted.

Writing samples should be written in English unless otherwise noted. The Graduate School has no specific formatting requirements; however, each department may have set their own.  Please click on the links below to learn more. • Statement of Financial Rescources

Applicants that are applying to any of our master’s programs other than the School of Architecture will be required to fill out the Statement of Financial Resources during the application process.

The information provided on this form is not used when evaluating an application for admission. It will be reviewed by the Graduate School only if the department recommends an application for admission. Financial assistance for graduate students is awarded on the basis of academic merit, academic promise, and on the basis of financial need as indicated on this form. Applicants may be asked for additional forms such as W-2, tax return, or similar financial documentation to verify data.

There is no requirement to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form to apply for fellowship or assistantship awards at Princeton. All applicants are automatically considered for all available funding.

提出期限

コース開始時期（9 月）

• 書類の提出期限：11月25日〜翌１月2日頃（コースにより異なる）
• 合格発表の期間：1月末から３月中旬頃

出願書類の提出期限は学科によって全く異なり、毎年変わる可能性があります。必ず書類の作成前と出願前に、各コースのウェブサイトで締切日を確認し、出願は早めの準備を心がけましょう。アメリカに在住していない場合はインターネット上での申請になる為、手続きの方法を間違えたり書類が不足していたとしても誰も直接指摘してくれません。しっかりと申請方法を確認して、慎重かつ早めに書類を揃えていくことを推奨します。

なお、プリンストン大学は志望者数が多く、世界中から多くの優秀な学生が応募するので、早めに、かつ、Admission Officeの目にとまるような内容の自己推薦文等を準備しましょう。

プリンストン大学院の合格率

 
2018年のプリンストン大学の合格率は６.4%です。

プリンストン大学が所属するアイビーリーグの大学はどの大学も毎年の合格率が軒並み10％を下回っていて、プリンストン大学も同様です。アイビーリーグの大学レベルを日本の偏差値に当てはめると、平均して80以上であると言われています。しかし、アメリカの大学はペーパーテストの学力によって合否が決まる日本の大学と異なり、出願者の個性や経歴がどれほど大学にマッチしているかも合格のための重要な要素になります。

高校のGPAの考慮等はあるものの、学力順に学生を選抜することはせず、学生自身のユニークさを評価するなど、多様性を重視しています。プリンストン大学の求める人物像につながる経歴、経験等を強調する自己推薦文や推薦状を準備して出願することがコロンビア大学の合格への近道となります。

学費と奨学金制度

学費と生活費

在学期間は平均して２年から４年になりますが、選択したコースや、既に取得している学位によって在学期間は短縮されることもあるため、ここでは１年間で必要な金額を紹介します。

まず、学費ですが、プリンストン大学の授業料は平均して年間37,000ドル（1ドル＝110円：約410万円）必要です。プリンストン大学の学生寮の寮費は年間6,000ドル（約66万円）です。寮以外だともう少し金額が上がると考えておきましょう。

それに加えて、大学で必要な書籍代が3,500ドル（約39万円）と食費や交通費などを含む生活費等（100万円程度）で約200万円は必要になるので、学費と合計すると年間で680万円程度が必要になります。

Daniel M. Sachs Scholarship at Princeton

年間の学費は約450万円と決して安くはないのですが、他のアイビーリーグの大学と比較するとプリンストン大学の学費は最も安価ですし、プリンストン大学は近年積極的に奨学金や学費補助の手当を新たに設けています。

2014年からは返済不要の奨学金（Daniel M. Sachs Scholarship at Princeton）が改定されました。通常奨学金には受給要項に両親の収入を記載する項目があるのですが、この制度は経済状況を問わず、在学生のほとんどは無条件で申請できることになっています。

この制度を利用すれば年間に必要な学費のほとんどをまかなうことができます。

今回はそんなプリンストン大学が所属するアイビーリーグ誕生の由来と成功の理由を少しご紹介します。

アイビーリーグ（Ivy league）の誕生 

アイビーリーグに属する大学はHarvard、Yale、Cornell、Princeton、Columbia、Princeton、Dartmouth、Pennsylvaniaの8校です。これら8校は地理的に見ると、すべてがアメリカ北東部に集まっています。この中で最初に設立された大学がハーバード大学です。ハーバード大学は設立初期から今後のアメリカ社会が求める人材の在り方が多様化することを提唱し、「幅広い教養を身につけ、人格的にバランスがとれた知識人」を育てる教育方針を掲げていました。このような教育を現在は「リベラルアーツ教育」といいますが、ハーバード大学はその先駆的な教育機関でした。

ハーバード大学が設立されたとされる1636年以降も、その近辺にはヨーロッパから移住してきた人々が次々と街や大学を設けました。そこから１世紀の間にハーバード大学の付近に設立された７つの大学が現在のアイビーリーグと呼ばれる大学で、地理的な関係性もあり、ハーバード大学の「リベラルアーツ教育」が真っ先に根付いていったといわれています。
